Therapeutic Support

Experiencing a mental health problem in childhood is one of the biggest barriers to achieving positive wellbeing in later life and yet currently, only a quarter of children affected are getting specialist help.

Counselling within school is a professional activity, delivered by qualified Child Counsellors, on a weekly basis.  Counsellors can offer children who are struggling an opportunity to explore and understand their difficulties, within a relationship of agreed confidentiality.

At Wentworth, we are currently able to offer Play Therapy, Counselling and ELSA support within our school, services we pay for to support children identified as needing this level of support.

ELSA

What is ELSA?

In schools, ELSA stands for Emotional Literacy Support Assistant.

ELSA support in schools is designed to help schools support the emotional needs of their pupils.

ELSA acknowledges that children and young people learn best when they feel happier and their emotional needs are being addressed.

ELSAs are trained to plan and deliver programmes of support to pupils in their school who may be experiencing temporary or long term additional emotional needs. A lot of work that ELSAs do will be on an individual basis with one child, however, there are cases where group sessions may be appropriate such as when working on social skills and friendship skills.

What can ELSAs help with?

There are a lot of emotional skills that ELSAs can help with, including:

  • Social Skills development

  • Bereavement support

  • Support with understanding Social Situations

  • Therapeutic Stories

  • Anger Management

  • Self-esteem

  • Real-life problem-solving skills

  • Friendship support
